Plastic lined steel pipe combines the best of both common piping systems, metallic and nonmetallic piping into one. Metallic pipe is subject to corrosion, and carbon steel is the most common material used for process piping. Metallic pipe is strong, easy to work with, and inexpensive. However, even mildly corrosive fluids can rapidly eat away, from the inside out, severely limiting the safe and economic use of metal piping. Serious contamination of the product is certain.

Nonmetallic piping, thermoplastics, does not have the physical strength of metallic piping. In addition, plastic piping can become brittle due to leaching plasticizers in acid service. Plastic piping is also subject to ultraviolet attack.
